Studio Report #4: Espen Kvålsvoll

2nd-4th October 2020 12-5pm
Please join us for the opening Thursday 1st October 6-8pm

Studio Report #4 presents new works by the young Norwegian painter Espen Kvålsvoll.

With a post-Impressionist technique and a post-modern approach to visual material, Kvålsvoll’s process is the integration of motifs from diverse sources into compositions that play with the boundary between pattern and figuration. The characteristically bold brushwork, compressed tonal range and heavily layered approach belie the carefully constructed arrangements, which are worked out in detail as pencil sketches. For the works presented in Studio Reports, Kvålsvoll has been working at the largest scale his current studio space will permit, exploring an almost psychedelic sense of simultaneity in all-over compositions that seem to have materialised directly onto the raw canvas.

Kvålsvoll (born 1992 in Trondheim) graduated from the MFA programme at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2019. He recently exhibited at Van Etten, Oslo and his work is also currently on show at Høstutstillingen at Kunstnernes hus.
