Opening performance at 7pm
Kunsthall Oslo is very pleased to present a new-commissioned solo project from the Oslo-based artist and designer Sara Skogøy. The beautifully-titled Mothers I’d Like to Forgive is a virtuoso sculptural work that takes the playful but fearless approach of Skogøy’s previous productions to a new level of technical mastery and thematic intensity.
This is a work that has been a long time in the making. Not just the sculpture itself – which is, coincidentally, the result of 9 months of artistic labour – but the theme of motherhood, which the artist has been researching ever since she turned 23, the age her mother was when she was born.
For the current Western generation, ideological representations of motherhood saturate the culture – from the girlboss who has it all to resurgent tradwife fantasies – but the honest sharing of knowledge and experience around childbirth is almost a clandestine activity. A significant proportion of women who have children – perhaps one in ten – regret their decision, but it’s taboo to express or discuss these feelings in a public forum. You may experience Mothers I’d Like to Forgive as a disturbing, or generous, or entertaining, or theatrical, or even political artwork, but you will not find it constrained by this taboo.
For the opening of Skogøy’s show, we are very lucky to have a one-time-only performance by the awesome Frida Vige Helle and Nami Kitagawa Aam created especially for the occasion. Please arrive at 7pm sharp to experience the full performance work.
Sara Skogøy’s sculpture was created with the assistance of Tanita Aaram, Lucas P. Vallejo, Cara Lien and Marte Mestad, and the support of Oslo Kommune.
