Educate, Agitate, Organize

ASSATA
February 9th – March 10th 2024 /
Opening February 9th 7-9pm – Poetry reading by Sana Elmo 7:30pm

After two years hosting ASSATA in our project room, we are very pleased to invite them to take over the gallery space at Kunsthall Oslo and manifest their vision in a larger setting. ASSATA is a curated library and publisher that specializes in works by revolutionary writers, with a central focus on decolonization and the critical examination of society and culture. Their mission is to amplify radical voices from the global majority and promote study, community-building, and dialogue.

ASSATA’s collection, which includes over 500 books, is open for browsing and borrowing. Beyond the library, they actively organize reading groups, study circles, film screenings, poetry nights, talks, discussions, and workshops in collaboration with their comrades.

The library is named in honour of Assata Shakur, a revolutionary and former member of the Black Liberation Army. Founded in Oslo in 2021 by Piniel Demisse, Neslihan Ramzi, Garima Singh, and Sigrid Tviberg, ASSATA aims to foster both learning and engagement. This unique perspective on an ASSATA community space is a collaborative effort with Jelsen Lee Innocent, a Haitian-American artist based in Norway.

The exhibition includes art work by Alma Habbal, Birhana Mehari, Dina Al-Makhrami, Flexi Aukan, Hanan Seid, Ndanzi George Ochieng, Mohamed Bashir and Rafael Schlaepfer

In addition to the art work, the exhibition also consists of hand selected carpets from the boutique Sense of Style. The selection is curated by Nasim Mashak and is available for purchase.

We also extend many thanks to Broderikollektivet for their beautiful contributions.

We warmly welcome you to the ASSATA community gathering!
