Studio Report #4 – Julie Ebbing

13th-16th January 2022

Due to the current restrictions on public gatherings, there will not be an evening opening event for this exhibition. Instead the gallery will be open from 12-5pm on Thursday, the artist will be present and non-alcoholic refreshments will be served. The gallery will be open as usual Friday-Sunday 12-5pm.

Kunsthall Oslo is very pleased to present the new solo exhibition Må alt alltid handle om deg? by the Norwegian artist Julie Ebbing, the fourth in our current series of Studio Reports.

Julie Ebbing works primarily with printmaking and charcoal drawing, with a powerful style that mixes text and image and carries echoes of both Käthe Kollwitz and Raymond Pettibon. For this project at Kunsthall Oslo, Ebbing has brought her raw studio practice into the gallery, exposing the rough edges and vulnerabilities that are usually hidden from view. The exhibition overflows the borders of the drawings and spills into an installation that includes personal mementos, scrawled graffiti and hospital detritus, dramatising and politicising the neuro-pathologies of a precarious life lived under late capitalism.

Julie Ebbing is currently based in Trøndelag. She is the founder of the Hannah Ryggen Army and the winner of Subjekt magazine’s award for the best art exhibition of 2021 for her solo show at Kunstmuseet Nord-Trøndelag. Ebbing graduated from the Oslo National Academy of Art and was the recipient of the Kjell Nupen Memorial Grant (2017) and the Håkon Bleken art prize (2019).
